Should I Get Curtains or Drapes?

When choosing window coverings and decorations two similar but different options that you may come across are your windows and drapes. Often confused with one another, people don’t often realize the important but subtle details that make them distinct. Because of this, they wind up purchasing something that isn’t quite right for their home or style. Both make for great interior design elements that come in a variety of styles and are able to block out light.

Of course, the differences can still be nebulous and confusing, especially to newcomers.

So, to help you make the best choice when it comes to your window decorations, we’ve put together a quick guide on curtains versus drapes. Your drapery should last you years, after all. You’re going to be spending a lot of time with them, and want to make sure that you’re happy with your choice.

So, What’s Right For Me?

At TheCurtainShop, we believe that part of the beauty of interior design is finding your own sense of style. A lot of that comes from trying new things. That being said, we’re still here to help people who don’t quite know where to start.

For a good foundation on which to visualize each, here’s a basic descriptor:

Curtains – Light window coverings that are typically made of sheer or see-through material. Usually lets in light. Sometimes more decorative than “practical”.

Drapes – Uses lined, heavy fabric that usually keeps out all exterior light.

To give you a general sense of the “pros and cons” of each, some information you might want to consider when choosing between drapes and curtains include:

  • Weight: Drapes are typically heavier than curtains.
  • General Size: Drapes are normally taller and wider than curtains.
  • Ease of use: Drapes can be opened and shut by a simple drawstring. You typically have to manually operate a curtain.
  • Maintenance: Drapes can be steam cleaned or dry cleaned, while curtains (depending on the material), can be put in a gentle wash.
  • Tone: Curtains are typically considered somewhat more informal than drapes.

Here are some things to consider when purchasing your drapes using the above information:

  • How much time you have for cleaning.
  • How much you want to move around your drapery.
  • How willing you are to move around heavy material.
  • The mood and tone you want to accomplish for your room.
  • How often you might have to remove or store your drapery.
